During this Thanksgiving time of reflection, let’s reflect back on what we should all be thankful for…’80s wrestling!
It was twenty two years ago when the (then) WWF introduced its annual Thanksgiving extravaganza, the Survivor Series. Wikipedia has a solid write-up on it, but a quick summary:
- Randy Savage’s team (Savage recently had a face turn aka became a good guy) defeated the Honky Tonk Man’s team. Survivors were Savage, Ricky Steamboat, and Jake The Snake.
- The Fabulous Moolah’s team defeated Sensational Sherri’s team.
- Ten man tag team elimination match in which Strike Force and their teammates defeated The Hart Foundation’s team.
- Main Event: Andre the Giant, One Man Gang, King Kong Bundy, Butch Reed, and Rick Rude (with Bobby Heenan and Slick) defeated Hulk Hogan, Paul Orndorff, Don Muraco, Ken Patera, and Bam Bam Bigelow (with Oliver Humperdink).
Okay, just wanna talk about the last bullet-point above: Amazing match, it being the first time Hogan and Andre met in a ring since Wrestlemania III, earlier in the year. Orndorff and Muraco were in top form, really showing off their athleticism. And, wow, Bam Bam Bigelow was obviously getting a big push, as he was the last survivor on Hogan’s team, left alone against mountains of mass Bundy, Gang, and Andre! (He just managed to get through the first two, but then was easily pinned by Andre.) Clip below is the last ten minutes or so of the event, once again featuring highly entertaining commentary by Jesse and Gorilla!
